Every Dutchman knows this scene in every polder: pollard willows along the road. These are across the dike on which we live. They are a little lower on the dike so you look down on them a little from above.
Previously, when this dike still had a flood control function, it was meters higher. So then you would look at it even more. I also like the willows in spring and summer, when they are full of leaves; but in winter, when they have just been pollarded, I find them at their most beautiful. Then they become stalwart, almost human, forms, like some kind of guardians of the polder…..
