Marcel Straver paints in a style he describes as bold pointillism: short brushstrokes placed side by side that together build a vivid and colourful image. The technique has historical roots in the classical pointillism of the 19th century, but the execution, the subjects and the energy are entirely contemporary. These are modern paintings in the truest sense of the word: made now, with a view of the world as it is today.
This collection includes works such as Concrete Cut, Poppy Party, Polder Paradise and Twilight Trees. Every work is an original, painted on canvas in acrylic, and available directly through the website.
Being modern is not the same as being abstract. A modern painting can be figurative, show recognisable images, and still feel entirely contemporary. What makes it modern is the way it is made: the choice of technique, colour and composition from a present-day perspective, without following the conventions of classical painting.
For Marcel Straver that means no polished, detailed representation of reality, but a direct, energetic interpretation. The brushstroke is visible. The colours are intense. The composition is clear. That gives his paintings a presence you feel immediately, whether they are large or small, figurative or nearly abstract.
Pointillism was developed in the 19th century by artists who wanted to apply colour theory to painting. Colours are not mixed on the palette but placed side by side on the canvas, so the eye blends them optically. The result is a more vivid, luminous colour effect than traditional mixing can achieve.
Marcel Straver applies that technique in a bolder, freer form. The dots have become brushstrokes, precision has given way to expression, but the principle is the same. It makes his work immediately recognisable as modern and at the same time rooted in a rich art historical tradition.
Concrete Cut shows how that technique works in a graphic, almost abstract image: grass and plants along a concrete edge, their shadows sharp and blue on the pointillist surface. Twilight Trees demonstrates how silhouette and atmosphere can say more than detail ever could. And Portrait Elise Mathilde proves that even portraiture can be executed in a modern pointillist style without falling into cliché.
Modern paintings are popular precisely because they are so versatile. They work in a clean, minimalist interior just as well as in a warm, eclectic living room. The key is the right choice of colour, size and subject.
Want to bring colour and life into a neutral space? Then Poppy Party with its vivid red poppies or Dear Deer with a deer among flowers are strong choices. Looking for something calmer, with more structure? Then Polder Posts or Polder Paradise bring atmosphere without dominating the room. And for something personal and unique in the living room, a commissioned portrait is always an option.
Buying an original modern painting is different from ordering a print. An original has paint texture, depth and the unrepeatable presence of a handmade work. It is something no one else has.
All paintings in this collection are originals: painted on canvas, delivered on a stretcher frame and ready to hang. You can browse them on the website and take an option if you are interested, after which Marcel will get in touch personally. Want to see the work in person first? That is always possible after taking an option.
