Landscape is the central theme in Marcel Straver’s work. As a former graphic designer who has been painting since 2010, he draws his inspiration from the world around him: the polder near his home, verges full of flowers, a frost-covered field in winter or a sunny summer day with a wide-open horizon. That everyday beauty is never taken for granted, and that shows in his paintings.
This collection includes works such as Polder Paradise, Flower Frontier, Sunset Droppings and Twilight Trees. Every work is an original and available directly through the website. Commissioned paintings are also possible.
The Netherlands has a rich tradition in landscape painting. The Dutch Masters made the genre great: wide skies, flat polders, reflections in the water. That tradition lives on, including in contemporary art.
Marcel Straver connects to that tradition but in his own, contemporary way. His bold pointillist style breaks with the detailed technique of earlier centuries, but the love for the Dutch landscape is exactly the same. Wide skies, open meadows, water along the road: images he finds and renews again and again.
A large part of the landscape paintings in this collection is set in the polder. It is the landscape Marcel knows best and finds most inspiring. Pollarded willows, farmhouses in the morning mist, fields with drainage ditches, a road disappearing toward the horizon: quintessentially Dutch images he approaches each time from a fresh angle.
Polder Paradise shows a misty morning landscape with a farmhouse nestled among trees, seen from a green meadow beneath a clouded sky. Polder Posts shows a row of pollarded willows along a polder road, painted with a tight, rhythmic quality. And Sunrise Stripes captures the same polder landscape in early morning light, with fields and waterways stretching toward the horizon.
The Dutch landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, and that change is clearly visible across this collection. Summer, autumn and winter each offer their own atmosphere and palette.
In Flower Frontier, a verge bursts into colour along a fence, a farmhouse in the background and a clear blue sky above: summer at its best. Sunset Droppings captures autumn in the warm glow of a sunset above hay bales, the last light reflected in a puddle in the foreground. Frozen Fence brings winter: a wooden fence in a frost-covered field beneath an icy blue sky, sharp and cool.
What sets a Marcel Straver landscape painting apart is the attention to light and atmosphere. Not every moment of the day looks the same, and he works that difference consistently into his paintings. The penetrating warmth of midday sun, the soft glow of a sunset, the cool clarity of a winter morning: each work has its own quality of light.
The bold pointillist technique amplifies this effect. Because colours are placed side by side rather than blended, they retain their intensity. Light appears to almost radiate from the canvas, something that is much harder to achieve with other techniques.
Sometimes the landscape is not entirely empty. In Hello Sunshine, two women sit laughing on a bench in the middle of a green field, the sun fully present. And in Perfect Peace, two doves sit close together on a branch, an intimate moment within a vast landscape. Those small human or animal presences give the space scale and make the landscape feel inhabited and immediate.
Landscape paintings are timeless and suit almost any interior. They bring space and nature into a room in a way that decorative prints simply cannot match. An original landscape painting has character, depth and presence that only grows over time.
