Light, sky, water and seasons as subject, pointillism as technique. This collection of paintings with elements brings together original works by Marcel Straver: from sunrises and sunsets above the polder to frozen winter landscapes and bright summer scenes, all painted in his distinctive bold pointillist style. In Marcel Straver’s work, elements such as light, sky, water, mist and frost are never merely background. They define the mood of a painting and give it its character. A misty morning in the polder feels entirely different from a sharp winter’s day with frost on the land. Marcel captures those nuances and translates them into canvases that take you outside, back to the moment he observed and recorded.
This collection includes works such as Polder Paradise, Sunset Droppings, Sunrise Stripes and Frozen Fence. Every work is an original and available directly through the website. Commissioned paintings are also possible.
Light, sky and water have been central themes in painting for centuries. The Dutch Masters built much of their reputation on capturing light and atmosphere in the Dutch landscape. That is no accident: nowhere is the sky wider, the light more changeable or the horizon further away than in the polder.
Marcel Straver continues that tradition in his own way. Not with fine glazing layers or soft transitions, but with short, energetic brushstrokes that together build a vivid and atmospheric image. The elements are recognisable, but always filtered through his own eye and technique.
Marcel Straver’s bold pointillist technique is particularly well suited to capturing light and sky. Because colours are placed side by side rather than blended, they retain their intensity. A sunrise is not merely depicted but made almost tangible: the warmth of the early light, the lingering cool still in the air.
Sunrise Stripes shows green fields with a waterway in the early morning light, the strips of land and water alternating in a tight, rhythmic composition. Sunset Droppings captures a sunset over hay bales, with a puddle in the foreground reflecting the warm evening light. Both works show how Marcel freezes the fleeting moment of light and colour.
The elements change with the seasons, and that change is clearly visible across this collection. Summer, winter, thaw and frost: each season offers its own palette and atmosphere.
Frozen Fence shows a wooden fence in a frost-covered field beneath an icy blue sky, a sharp and cold image that makes winter palpable. Polder Paradise, by contrast, is bathed in soft morning haze: a farmhouse nestled in mist, surrounded by trees and meadow, a quintessentially Dutch landscape at its most serene. And Hello Sunshine brings back the warmth of a sunny day, with two women on a bench in bright summer light.
Water is a recurring element in the Dutch landscape and therefore in Marcel Straver’s paintings. Ditches, puddles and water reflections play a role in several works in this collection. Water adds depth to a composition and doubles the light: what is above is also visible below.
In Polder Posts, pollarded willows stretch along a polder road, the landscape mirrored in the water alongside. Polder Splendor combines a flower field in the foreground with a typical Dutch backdrop of farmhouses and trees. Both works show how the element of water expands the sense of space in a painting.
Landscape and elemental paintings are timeless interior pieces. They bring the outside in: sky, light and space into a room. That works particularly well in modern, light-filled interiors, but a well-chosen landscape painting also adds atmosphere and depth to warmer or more traditional spaces.
The variety in this collection makes it easy to find a work that suits you. A cool winter scene, a warm sunset, a misty morning or a sunny summer moment: each painting carries a different mood and every work is unique.
