Paintings for the bedroom by Marcel Straver

A painting in the bedroom serves a different purpose than art elsewhere in the home. The bedroom is the most personal room, the place where you unwind, let go of the day and wake up each morning. Art that hangs there should contribute to that atmosphere: calming but not dull, beautiful but not intrusive, present but not overwhelming.

This collection includes works such as Perfect Peace, Polder Paradise, Twilight Trees and Flower Frontier. Every work is an original and available directly through the website.

What makes a painting right for the bedroom?

The bedroom makes different demands on art than the living room or kitchen. A few considerations that help when choosing the right painting for above the bed or elsewhere in the bedroom.

Atmosphere and calm

A bedroom painting can afford to radiate stillness. Quiet nature, soft light, intimate moments: these are themes that work well. Perfect Peace shows two doves sitting close together on a bare branch, an intimate and silent image. Polder Paradise breathes a misty morning atmosphere with a farmhouse nestled in the light. And Twilight Trees shows tree silhouettes in the last light of the day, the moment just before night falls.

Colour and tone

Cool tones and muted colours have a calming effect in the bedroom. That does not mean a painting cannot have colour: warm, soft tones such as those in Dear Deer, a deer among purple and pink flowers, or the greens and yellows of Flower Frontier can work beautifully, as long as the overall mood of the work is restful.

Size and placement

Above a double bed, a larger format works best. A work of 90×90 cm or 100×100 cm has sufficient presence in that position. On a smaller wall or beside the bed, a slightly more compact format such as 70×70 cm may be a better fit.

Nature as a calming theme for the bedroom

Nature is by far the most chosen theme for bedroom art, and that is no coincidence. Nature calms. Trees, water, mist, flowers and animals in their surroundings radiate a stillness that artificial or abstract images rarely match.

Marcel Straver’s work is almost entirely rooted in his immediate surroundings: the polder, the nature around him, the changing seasons. That honesty and familiarity makes his paintings particularly well suited to the bedroom. These are not staged compositions but moments from real life, captured with feeling and skill.

Paintings for above the bed

The space above the bed is the most prominent position in the bedroom. It is what you see when you wake up and the last thing you look at before closing your eyes. A work in that position should not overstimulate but should hold your attention.

Poppy Party with its red poppies in a green field brings colour and life. Hello Sunshine radiates warmth and light, two women on a bench in the sun. Polder Posts brings the quiet space of the polder into the room, with a row of pollarded willows along a polder road. And Dead Duck is more direct and honest: a duck lying in the grass, an unexpected but striking work that holds a quiet presence even in the bedroom.

A personal painting for the bedroom

The bedroom is the most personal room in the home. It makes sense to choose a painting there that truly fits: a place you know, an animal that moves you, a colour that suits your sense of rest. Marcel also takes commissions, tailored to your wishes, the atmosphere of your bedroom and the dimensions that work. Get in touch via the contact page for the possibilities.
