The kitchen is one of the most-used rooms in the home, yet it is often overlooked when it comes to art. A good painting in the kitchen makes the space feel more complete, more personal and more welcoming. It does not have to be a still life with fruit or flowers: a lively landscape, a harvest scene or a colourful meadow can set exactly the right tone.
This collection includes works such as Home Harvest, Hay Harvest, Double Dutch and Polder Splendor. Every work is an original and available directly through the website.
A kitchen painting has different requirements than a work for the living room or bedroom. The kitchen is an active, often busy space. A painting there should not feel too delicate or too subdued. It can radiate energy, bring colour and draw the outside world in.
Marcel Straver’s works do that naturally. His bold pointillist style gives each painting a liveliness and presence that works well in a functional space. The colours are vivid but not aggressive, the subjects recognisable but never predictable.
The most fitting kitchen painting is one that connects to food, harvest or the land. Not as a decorative cliché still life, but as a work that bridges the kitchen and the world outside.
Home Harvest shows a metal colander with freshly harvested beetroot and a courgette with its flower, seen from above. It is an intimate and direct image of what a garden can yield, painted in the warm, rich palette that defines Marcel’s work. Hay Harvest moves out onto the land: a tractor with a hay press at work in a field full of hay rolls beneath a clear blue sky. Harvest at scale, full of rhythm and colour.
A kitchen painting does not need a direct reference to food. A lively landscape or an animal painting works just as well in a kitchen setting. The kitchen is, after all, the place where people gather, cook and catch up: a cheerful, colourful painting fits right in.
Double Dutch shows a black-and-white cow and her reflection in the water, a warm and recognisable Dutch image. Thirst shows a lamb drinking beside its mother, intimate and full of life. And Polder Splendor combines a blooming flower field in the foreground with farmhouses in the background, an inviting and colourful scene.
Colour works well in the kitchen. The warm yellows, greens and oranges that run through Marcel Straver’s work suit the atmosphere of cooking, eating and being together. But cooler, fresher works such as Birch Quartet with birch trees against a blue sky, or the dreamy Misty Meadow, can also work beautifully in a light, modern kitchen.
Size depends on the available wall. A smaller kitchen calls for a more compact work; an open kitchen that flows into the living area can carry a larger painting. Many works in this collection are painted on 80×80 cm or 90×90 cm canvases, sizes that hold their own in a kitchen without dominating the space.
An original painting in the kitchen is something quite different from a poster or a supermarket print. It has character, presence and a story. Every day you see it again, and every day it can show you something different: a detail in the paint texture, a colour that reads differently in another light, an association that resonates on that particular day.
